JANUARY 17, 2024 NEWSLETTER

Preserve Etowah

To the Residents of Etowah, As we mentioned in last week's newsletter, the Etowah Lions Club will be hosting a community meeting for us to meet the candidates for Henderson County Commissioner on Tuesday, January 23, at 6:30 PM.

This will be an opportunity for all of us to hear what each candidate thinks about the core issues of concern to the residents of Etowah.  Among the topics that we hope to be addressed are:

  • What are the candidates’ positions on the operation and proliferation of Waste Water Treatment Plants in Etowah and locating such plants in the town center

  • What facilities (e.g. restrooms, parking) need to be provided for the build-out of the Ecusta trail between Horseshoe and the County line?

  • The impact of the loosening county regulations for development in the floodplains of Etowah.

  • Aging school facilities such as West High School.

  • The incorporation of Etowah.

  • Protecting home values from development and the type of land use that is not in harmony with the surrounding residential setting.

  • Protection of wildlands, fields, and forests (i.e. open spaces.)

  • Protecting farmland.

There will be five candidates attending the event. Four are GOP candidates contesting two open seats in the GOP Primary, and one Democrat running in the general election.  For the GOP Primary races, early voting starts February 15th culminating in the March 5th primary.

Please note:Republicans and Unaffiliated voters can participate in the GOP primary race. For more information please click here.  While the county is divided into 5 Districts, the election of County Commissioners is considered to be at-large.  In other words, voters can (and should) cast a vote for all open seats.

We encourage everyone to take time to read through each candidates’ website and see where they stand on the issues of greatest concern to our community.

On the GOP side, the primary races are between the following:

Jay Egolf is challenging David Hill who currently represents our community in District 5.

-  Sheila Franklin is challenging incumbent  Daniel Andreotta in District 2.

In the general election on November 5, 2024, Erik Weber will be running against the candidate who wins the District 2 GOP Primary race
